Canvas Status Update 6 - Canvas is back online in limited capacity

Current Status
Canvas has now been restored and is available for use. As part of the continued recovery effort, third-party integrations and external tools are being restored carefully and in phases. Some services may remain temporarily unavailable while validation and reconnection work continues.
Password Reset
What to Expect
Beginning with your next login to the MyCOM Portal or district computers, you will be prompted to create a new password.
Since College of Marin uses Single Sign-On (SSO), changing your password in one place will automatically update it across connected college systems.
Faculty and staff returning to campus Monday may experience additional login prompts, password reset requests, or increased Service Desk wait times as these security changes take effect.
Password & Security Recommendations
CAL-CSIC and statewide cybersecurity partners continue recommending the following best practices:
- Be cautious of phishing emails, suspicious links, and unexpected attachments
- Avoid reusing passwords across multiple sites or personal accounts
- Report suspicious activity or emails to IT immediately
- Do not respond to extortion or cryptocurrency-related scam emails connected to this incident
Mobile Device Password Reset Help
We are aware of a current issue on some mobile devices where the password requirement helper text may not display correctly during the password reset process. We are actively working with our vendor on a fix.
Students experiencing issues on mobile devices are encouraged to reset their passwords using a campus computer lab or desktop computer for the best experience
If you are resetting your password on a mobile device:
- Try rotating your phone to landscape mode
- If available, use a desktop or laptop computer for the easiest experience
Password Complexity
Your new password must:
Be at least 12 characters long
Include at least one uppercase letter (A-Z)
Include at least one lowercase letter (a-z)
Include at least one number (0-9)
Include at least one special character (example: ! @ # $ % ^ & * _ - + =)
Your password cannot:
Include personal names
Use common words or dictionary words
Contain more than 3 numbers in sequence
Important Notes
Too many failed password attempts will temporarily lock your account for 10 minutes
Passwords expire periodically and will need to be updated in the future

Faculty may continue communicating important updates regarding assignments, deadlines, and course materials through MyCOM webmail while Canvas remains unavailable.
For Students
Your instructors will continue communicating through MyCOM webmail regarding assignments, deadlines, and course materials.

Canvas Status Update 5 - COM continues to work through recovery efforts

Current Status
Canvas continues to remain unavailable for College of Marin while IT continues working through recovery efforts related to the ongoing cybersecurity incident impacting Instructure Canvas.
While some colleges have begun restoring Canvas access, College of Marin continues coordinating with the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office, statewide cybersecurity partners, Instructure, and external cybersecurity advisors to safely restore services.
Progress is being made, and our team is actively working to restore access as quickly and securely as possible.
Additional updates and communications will continue to be posted on the College of Marin IT Status page as more information becomes available.

Canvas Update 4: Password reset for all MyCOM accounts

Current Status
Canvas continues to remain unavailable for College of Marin while the college continues coordinating with statewide cybersecurity partners, the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office, Instructure, and external cybersecurity advisors.
As part of College of Marin’s ongoing response to this cybersecurity incident, College of Marin IT will be requiring a password reset for all MyCOM accounts.
Why This Is Happening
While there is currently no indication that College of Marin internal systems have been compromised, proactively resetting passwords is one of the most effective ways to help protect students, faculty, staff, and college systems during incidents like this.

Canvas Update 3: Access Remains Restricted

Current Status
While some colleges may already be restoring access to Canvas, College of Marin continues to follow guidance from the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office and cybersecurity partners before restoring broad access to the platform.
Our priority remains protecting our students, employees, and institutional data. Canvas access through MyCOM and SSO authentication remains restricted for non-administrative users while we continue evaluating the safety of the environment.
If you currently still have access to Canvas through an existing authenticated session, please log out immediately.
What College of Marin Is Doing
College of Marin Information Technology staff are actively coordinating with:
- The CCC Security Center
- The California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office
- Instructure
- External cybersecurity partners
We are also reviewing additional security measures, including strengthened authentication controls and expanded MFA policies.
Important Security Reminder
Compromised email information has reportedly been used to target students with phishing emails requesting money or personal information.
Please:
- Do not click suspicious links or attachments
- Do not provide passwords or financial information through email
- Carefully verify unexpected messages before responding
- Use strong, unique passwords
- Enable multi-factor authentication whenever available
- Report suspicious emails to IT immediately

Canvas Update 2

What Happened
Canvas experienced a significant cybersecurity incident impacting institutions nationwide. Information shared through statewide channels indicates threat actors targeted a vendor environment associated with the platform.
As a precaution, College of Marin restricted access to Canvas while additional information and guidance are reviewed.
What You Should Do
If you attempted to log into Canvas recently, please reset your College of Marin password and remain cautious of suspicious emails or unexpected requests for information.
Please do not attempt to log into Canvas until the college communicates that access has been safely restored.
For Students
Canvas course materials, assignments, and related services may remain unavailable during this incident. Faculty and staff have been encouraged to remain flexible and communicate directly with students whenever possible.

The College continues working to maintain instructional continuity and core support services while actively monitoring the situation.
Initial Alert: Canvas Service Interruption

Canvas experienced a nationwide outage impacting institutions across the country.
As a precaution:
- Canvas was removed from MyCOM
- Users were advised not to attempt login until further notice
College of Marin IT immediately began coordinating with statewide cybersecurity partners and vendor representatives to assess the incident and determine appropriate next steps.
